After escaping from a toxic relationship and rural backwoods boredom, science fiction artist, Sam Dvorshak, runs back home to New Jersey and family. She immediately reunites with her long time pal Tony DeFranco, a cool and handsome Italian dude who buys and sells junk.
Their first time out together Tony takes her to his favorite dumpsite where they stumble upon a gruesome murder and plunge into an investigation that steers them to obnoxious suspects, hobos, big dogs, and Aunt Vilma. While getting no respect, Sam and Tony diligently forge ahead battling death threats, shadowy giants, and age bias to ultimately reveal the identity of the fiend who committed the heinous and grisly homicide.
What People Say
Sam and the Junkman, A New Jersey Murder Mystery by Marilyn Salzano is a fun tale! I loved the peculiar elements of life at home in this small New Jersey town. The author has such a colorful way of portraying the surroundings while taking you on a fantastical account through the unraveling of a murder through the eyes of a couple of youthful and outgoing young adults. The story is written with a realistic, yet nostalgic feel, from the “hardcore Roman Catholic” aunts to a drive down Neilson Street, “the oldest and most dilapidated part of town”. Sam is drawn “toward the freakish and bizarre, the crackpot, the fringers, the friends of the friendless”; If you are too, or just want something entertaining and curious, this book’s for you.
Sam and The Junkman, A New Jersey Murder Mystery by Marilyn Salzano is a great summer read! Or any season, for that matter. It is sharp and witty, sweet and engaging. I did not grow up in New Jersey, but because of Salzano’s vivid descriptions I feel as though I’ve visited. And it keeps you guessing to the end, a pleasurable who-dunnit!
